GENESIS: In the First Five Days, "Then God said, “Let there be...!""

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. (Genesis 1:1-2)

We studied in the previous lesson that we have to believe that God was the creator of all things.  Even science has proven with the discovery of gravitational waves "that ‘it is certain that the universe began at a definite time through an act of creation,...’" (read GENESIS: In the Beginning: Creation and Science do not Contradict)  We also have to believe that God was not created but always existed; “Thus says the Lord,... the Lord of hosts: ‘I am the First and I am the Last; besides Me there is no God. And who can proclaim as I do?" (Isaiah 44:6-7) By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible. (Hebrews 11:3)

We who are Christians know that God created everything and that it only took Him six days to complete the miracle of creation.  As for the length of the days of creation, whether they were twenty-four hour days or periods of time that God refers to as days, since ...with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. (II Peter 3:8); it's debatable. However, each day of creation is concluded with the statement, So the evening and the morning were the first [second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth] day:

Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day. (Genesis 1:3-5)

Then God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.” Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven. So the evening and the morning were the second day. (Genesis 1:6-8)

How AWESOME is our God, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water,... (II Peter 3:8) He has made the earth by His power, He has established the world by His wisdom, and has stretched out the heavens at His discretion. When He utters His voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens: “And He causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth. He makes lightning for the rain, He brings the wind out of His treasuries.” (Jeremiah 10:12-13)

Then God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear”; and it was so. And God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters He called Seas. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth”; and it was so. And the earth brought forth grass, the herb that yields seed according to its kind, and the tree that yields fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. So the evening and the morning were the third day. (Genesis 1:9-13)

Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so. Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day [sun], and the lesser light to rule the night [moon]. He made the stars also. God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth, and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. So the evening and the morning were the fourth day. (Genesis 1:14-19)

Then God said, “Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the face of the firmament of the heavens.” So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters abounded, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” So the evening and the morning were the fifth day. (Genesis 1:20-23)

Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind: cattle and creeping thing and beast of the earth, each according to its kind”; and it was so. And God made the beast of the earth according to its kind, cattle according to its kind, and everything that creeps on the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. (Genesis 1:23-25)

"What came first, the chicken or the egg?"  The chicken!  God created everything, and then He put within everything the ability to reproduce itself. He causes the grass to grow for the cattle, and vegetation for the service of man, that he may bring forth food from the earth,... (Psalm 104:14) Who covers the heavens with clouds, Who prepares rain for the earth, Who makes grass to grow on the mountains. He gives to the beast its food,... (Psalm 147:8-9) You visit the earth and water it, You greatly enrich it; the river of God is full of water; You provide their grain, for so You have prepared it. You water its ridges abundantly, You settle its furrows; You make it soft with showers, You bless its growth. You crown the year with Your goodness, and Your paths drip with abundance. They drop on the pastures of the wilderness, and the little hills rejoice on every side. The pastures are clothed with flocks; the valleys also are covered with grain; they shout for joy, they also sing. (Psalm 65:9-13)

For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them,... (Exodus 20:11) But what about the sixth day of creation?  That was the most amazing day of all, which we will study in the next lesson...
