Do not think that I [Jesus] came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot [dot of i] or one tittle [cross of t] will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:17-19)
I. So he [Jesus] answered and said, “ ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind.’” (Deuteronomy 6:5; Matthew 22:37; Mark 12:30; Luke 10:27) The first four commandments deal with our relationship with God (Exodus 20:1-11; Deuteronomy 5:1-15):
1. “You shall have no other gods before Me. [Matthew 6:19-21]
2. “You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. [Matthew 6:24]
3. “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain. [Matthew 5:33-37]
4. “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it. [Mark 2:23-28]
II. [Jesus said] And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ (Leviticus 19:18; Matthew 22:39; Mark 12:31; Luke 10:27) The remaining six commandments deal with our relationship with eachother (Exodus 20:12-17; Deuteronomy 5:16-21; Romans 13:9):
5. “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you. [Ephesians 6:1-4]
6. “You shall not murder. [Matthew 5:21-26]
7. “You shall not commit adultery. [Matthew 5:27-32]
8. “You shall not steal. [John 10:10]
9. “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. [Matthew 18:16; II Corinthians 13:1]
10. “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.” [Luke 12:15]
Observe and obey all these words which I command you, that it may go well with you and your children after you forever, when you do what is good and right in the sight of the LORD your God. (Deuteronomy 12:28) There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. (Romans 8:1-4)
