COLOSSIANS: Behave "Christ-like"; "If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth!"

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.  And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. (Colossians 3:16-17)

Paul continued his letter to the church in Colossi by giving this third and final warning, to not continue living and behaving as the world, but as Christians.  We are to behave "Christ-like"; If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God.  Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.  For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.  When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory. (Colossians 3:1-4); For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God Than dwell in the tents of wickedness. For the Lord God is a sun and shield; The Lord will give grace and glory; No good thing will He withhold From those who walk uprightly. O Lord of hosts, Blessed is the man who trusts in You! (Psalm 84:10-12)

The first step in behaving "Chist-like" is to stop doing those things that displease God, through the power of the Holy Spirit in us. Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.  Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them. But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds,... (Colossians 3:5-9); These six things the Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him: A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood, A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil, A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among brethren. (Proverbs 6:16-19)

The next step is to start doing those things that please God, through the power of His Holy Spirit; and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him, where where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all. Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.  But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. (Colossians 3:10-14); But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,  gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. (Galatians 5:22-23);  And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love. (I Corinthians 13:13)

God goes on to explain through Paul how to put this new way of behaving into practice with our everyday relationships:

- husbands & wives: Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them. (Colossians 3:18-19); Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.  For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body.  Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for herthat He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word,  that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.  So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself.  For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church.  .. Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. (Ephesians 5:22-33) No woman should have a problems submitting to a husband that loves her like Christ loves the church, if Christ is indeed the "head" of that husband! (Read EPHESIANS: "Submit" is Not a Bad Word, "submitting to one another in the fear of God!")

- parents & children: Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord. Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged. (Colossians 3:20-21); Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise: “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.” [Exodus 20:12; Deuteronomy 5:16] And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord. (Ephesians 6:1-4) Parents, we are to discipline our children in love, and children are to respect our parents in obedience!

- employees & employers: Bondservants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh, not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but in sincerity of heart, fearing God.  And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men,  knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.  But he who does wrong will be repaid for what he has done, and there is no partiality. Masters, give your bondservants what is just and fair, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven. (Colossians 3:22-25, 4:1); Bondservants, be obedient to those who are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in sincerity of heart, as to Christ; not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart,  with goodwill doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men,  knowing that whatever good anyone does, he will receive the same from the Lord, whether he is a slave or free.  And you, masters, do the same things to them, giving up threatening, knowing that your own Master also is in heaven, and there is no partiality with Him. (Ephesians 6:5-9) We are to work as if we are working  directly for God, and treat others the way we want to be treated, regardless of what position of authority we may have!

God is a loving God, a caring God, a forgiving God, and all the other wonderful characteristics that people like to focus on.  But God is also a God of order, a righteous God, and a just God, For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. (II Corinthians 5:10) We may not agree with everything God commands us to do, but God wants all of us who are Christians To know wisdom and instruction, to perceive the words of understanding, to receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, judgment, and equity; (Proverbs 1:2-3) "...do not forget my law, but let your heart keep my commands; for length of days and long life and peace they will add to you. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and depart from evil. [Wisdom's] ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace." (Psalm 3:1-2, 7, 17) And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. (Colossians 3:15) AMEN!
