LEVITICUS: The Lord God Gives the Law Regarding the Priests' Portion of the Peace Offerings; "For the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the heave offering I have taken from the children of Israel, from the sacrifices of their peace offerings, and I have given them to Aaron the priest and to his sons from the children of Israel by a statute forever."

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘You shall not eat any fat, of ox or sheep or goat. And the fat of an animal that dies naturally, and the fat of what is torn by wild beasts, may be used in any other way; but you shall by no means eat it. For whoever eats the fat of the animal of which men offer an offering made by fire to the Lord, the person who eats it shall be cut off from his people. (Leviticus 7:22-25)

We studied in a previous lesson, and the Lord God is reiterating it now, that when the peace offerings sacrifices were made, 'And he shall lay his hand on the head of his offering, and kill it at the door of the tabernacle of meeting; and Aaron’s sons, the priests, shall sprinkle the blood all around on the altar. Then he shall offer from the sacrifice of the peace offering an offering made by fire to the Lord. (Leviticus 3:1-3)

'The fat that covers the entrails and all the fat that is on the entrails, the two kidneys and the fat that is on them by the flanks, and the fatty lobe attached to the liver above the kidneys, he shall remove; and Aaron’s sons shall burn it on the altar upon the burnt sacrifice, which is on the wood that is on the fire, as an offering made by fire, a sweet aroma to the Lord. ... This shall be a perpetual statute throughout your generations in all your dwellings: you shall eat neither fat nor blood.’”(Leviticus 3:3-5, 17)

The offering of the fat and blood of the animal was a part of the sacrifice to be made to the Lord God.  It was not to be eaten. 'Moreover you shall not eat any blood in any of your dwellings, whether of bird or beast. Whoever eats any blood, that person shall be cut off from his people.’” (Leviticus 7:26-27) Yes, this was a part of the requirements regarding the offerings sacrifices, but this is still a good thing to practice today. All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify. (I Corinthians 10:23)

We should not eat the fat of animals because it contributes storing fat in the body and could lead to obesity, which contributes to high cholesterol, which contributes to high blood pressure. We also should not eat the blood of an animal for the same reason the Lord God gave Noah when He released him and all with him from the ark, "But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood. Surely for your lifeblood I will demand a reckoning; from the hand of every beast I will require it, and from the hand of man. From the hand of every man’s brother I will require the life of man." (Genesis 9:4-5)

Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘He who offers the sacrifice of his peace offering to the Lord shall bring his offering to the Lord from the sacrifice of his peace offering. His own hands shall bring the offerings made by fire to the Lord. The fat with the breast he shall bring, that the breast may be waved as a wave offering before the Lord. (Leviticus 7:28-30)

'And the priest shall burn the fat on the altar, but the breast shall be Aaron’s and his sons’. Also the right thigh you shall give to the priest as a heave offering from the sacrifices of your peace offerings. He among the sons of Aaron, who offers the blood of the peace offering and the fat, shall have the right thigh for his part. For the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the heave offering I have taken from the children of Israel, from the sacrifices of their peace offerings, and I have given them to Aaron the priest and to his sons from the children of Israel by a statute forever.’” (Leviticus 7:31-34)

Again, as we studied previously, with all the offerings the people brought, the Lord God delegated a portion be for Aaron and his sons, the priests, since they had no other job but to minister to the Lord God by serving the Tabernacle and making the sacrifices for the people; they had no means of providing for themselves, therefore they would receive a portion of all sacrifices for food. The wave offering and the heave offering of their peace offerings symbolized giving thanks to God for providing their needs.

For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving; for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer. (I Timothy 4:4-5) God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. (Genesis 1:31) But just because it is good does not necessarily mean that it is good to eat, even though it may be allowed. We will study which animals are better to eat compared to others in a future lesson.

But, as For the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the heave offering, This is the consecrated portion for Aaron and his sons, from the offerings made by fire to the Lord, on the day when Moses presented them to minister to the Lord as priests. The Lord commanded this to be given to them by the children of Israel, on the day that He anointed them, by a statute forever throughout their generations. (Leviticus 7:35-36)

This is the law of the burnt offering, the grain offering, the sin offering, the trespass offering, the consecrations, and the sacrifice of the peace offering, which the Lord commanded Moses on Mount Sinai, on the day when He commanded the children of Israel to offer their offerings to the Lord in the Wilderness of Sinai. (Leviticus 7:37-38)
