In the previous studies, we learned that before the flood, the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh;..." ... Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. (Genesis 6:3-5) After the flood, God spoke to Noah, saying, “Go out of the ark, you and your wife, and your sons and your sons’ wives with you." (Genesis 8:15-16) So God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them: “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth." (Genesis 9:1)
Noah and his sons were very fruitful and multiply, and indeed filled the whole earth from generations to generations. (Genesis 10) So the earth was repopulated, but at some point before ...the earth was divided; (Genesis 10:25) the whole earth had one language and one speech. After the earth as divided, the descendants of Noah's son, Japheth, From these the coastland peoples of the Gentiles were separated into their lands, everyone according to his language, according to their families, into their nations. (Genesis 10:5)
The descendants of Noah's son, Shem, their dwelling place was from Mesha as you go toward Sephar, the mountain of the east. These were the sons of Shem, according to their families, according to their languages, in their lands, according to their nations. (Genesis 10:30-31)
The descendants of Noah's son, Ham, one named Cush, he began to be a mighty one on the earth. ... And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel [Babylon, meaning confusion], Erech, Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. From that land he went to Assyria and built Nineveh, Rehoboth Ir, Calah, and Resen between Nineveh and Calah (that is the principal city). Mizraim begot Ludim, Anamim, Lehabim, Naphtuhim, Pathrusim, and Casluhim (from whom came the Philistines and Caphtorim). (Gensis 10:8-13)
Also from Ham's son, Caanan's descendents would come the Jebusite, the Amorite, and the Girgashite; the Hivite, the Arkite, and the Sinite; the Arvadite, the Zemarite, and the Hamathite. Afterward the families of the Canaanites were dispersed. And the border of the Canaanites was from Sidon as you go toward Gerar, as far as Gaza; then as you go toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha. These were the sons of Ham, according to their families, according to their languages, in their lands and in their nations. (Genesis 10:16-20)
Ham's son, Cush was a mighty one on the earth. ... And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel [Babylon, meaning confusion]. And it came to pass, as they [Cush and his descendants] journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they dwelt there. Then they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They had brick for stone, and they had asphalt for mortar. And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.” (Genesis 11:2-4)
But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built. And the Lord said, “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them. (Genesis 11:5-6)
"Come, let Us [Genesis 1:1-2, 26-27, 2:1-5] go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.” So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the city. Therefore its name is called Babel, [Babylon, meaning confusion] because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth. (Genesis 11:7-9)
We will study in future lesson how these descendants of Cush continued to be might men and mighty hunters on the earth, even after God had confused their language and the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth. We will reference these scriptures many times when we go further into the study of the descendants of Shem, whose direct descendants will be the children of Israel, from whom the Seed of the woman, Christ Jesus will come. Ham's descendants, the Babylonians, Philistines, Canaanites, etc. will be a constant source of suffering for the children of Israel, even to this day.
