I PETER: Suffering as a Christian Proves the Genuineness of Our Faith; "He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, 'Be holy, for I am holy!'"

He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” (Matthew 16:15-19)

Peter was one of the twelve disciples and he was the leader when the church started in Jerusalem, after Christ's resurrection and ascension. (Act 1-3) It is believed that the gospel of Mark was dictated by the Apostle Peter.  However, this letter was written by Peter to encourage Christians in the areas outside of Jerusalem, mainly the Gentile areas, whether Jews or non-Jews, who were enduring intense persecution and to prepare them for the difficult times ahead of them.  Peter used Jesus' own suffering as the cornerstone of his letter of exhortation.  He admonished believers to suffer as "Christians," not as lawbreakers. *Strong's Key Word Study Bible notes

Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,
To the pilgrims of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace be multiplied. (I Peter 1:1-2)

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. (I Peter 1:3-5)

This summarizes salvation!  Because ...God has raised Him [Jesus] from the dead, you will be saved. (Romans 10:9) We can have hope that we too will be resurrected after we physically die, For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,... (Titu 2:11-13)

In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, receiving the end of your faith—the salvation of your souls. (I Peter 1:6-9)

Jesus told the disciple Thomas, after His resurrection but before His ascension, “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seenand yet have believed.” (John 20:29) That's all of us who have believed the Word of God since Christ Jesus' resurrection.  All that we have gone through are going through or may go through only helps to prove the genuineness of your faith. Jesus warned the disciples and all of us who would follow, "And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved." (Matthew 10:22; Mark 13:13)

Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you, searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow. To them it was revealed that, not to themselves, but to us they were ministering the things which now have been reported to you through those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things which angels desire to look into. (I Peter 1:10-12)

God does not lie! Everything He prophesied through the prophets would happen to Christ happened, and there is still more to come; therefore we can believe everything that Christ told us would happen to us if we believe on Him.  We will suffer just as He and the apostles suffered, but we will also receive the glories that would follow, receiving the end of your faith—the salvation of your souls.

Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.” [Leviticus 11:44-45, 19:220:7] (I Peter 1:13-16) There's a great mis-teaching in the world today, that God only loves us and wants us to be happy and give us everything we desire. Yes, that's part of God's character, but His blessings are conditional.

We have to be holy, for He is holy! We have to be obedient children, who not only read and listen to, but also hear and obey the Word of God!  We can't live the way we want to live, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; but ...present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. (Romans 12:1-2) Then He [Jesus] said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. (Luke 9:23) Not our will, but Thy will be done! (Matthew 6:10; Luke 11:2)
