THE GOSPEL: Pray for Mercy, through Faith!

When Jesus departed from there, two blind men followed Him, crying out and saying, “Son of David, have mercy on us!” (Matthew 9:27)

The shortest prayer but also the most powerful prayer that any of us can pray is "Lord, have mercy on me!" (see Grace and Mercy = Love; Justice, and Mercy) Mercy is when God doesn't do to us what we do deserve. King David prayed this way, I said, “Lord, be merciful to me; Heal my soul, for I have sinned against You.” (Psalm 41:4) These men weren't necessarily blind because they had sinned, and any of us who have a physical limitation don't necessarily have one because we've sinned. Just as we will study in a future lesson about another blind man Jesus encouters, And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him. (John 9:2-3) Whether we have a physical limitation or not, we all do have one thing in common, sin, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, (Romans 3:23) and just like these men and King David prayed, we all need to do the same, and ask Son of David, have mercy on us; Lord, be merciful to me!

And when He had come into the house, the blind men came to Him. And Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to Him, “Yes, Lord.” Then He touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith let it be to you.” And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, saying, “See that no one knows it.” But when they had departed, they spread the news about Him in all that country. (Matthew 9:27-31) Again, as we've studied previously, what brings about healing? FAITH! (see THE GOSPEL: One Touch Changed a Life; THE GOSPEL: Parable of the Mustard Seed & Leaven; THE GOSPEL: Faith of an Intercessor; JAMES: Faith Proven by Behavior; Faith) If we have heard and believe the Word of God, and accepted Christ Jesus as our Savior and Lord, we are children of God; and whatever we need or want, we have all the right to ask God ...in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through faith in Him.  (Ephesians 3:11-12)

As they went out, behold, they brought to Him a man, mute and demon-possessed. And when the demon was cast out, the mute spoke. And the multitudes marveled, saying, “It was never seen like this in Israel!” But the Pharisees said, “He casts out demons by the ruler of the demons.” (Matthew 9:32-34) As Jesus continues healing people of all kinds of conditions, the people are marveling at what they are witnessing, while the Pharisees and religious leaders are trying to come up with any excuse the explain what Jesus is doing, other than admitting that He is the Son of God.  (see THE GOSPEL: "The Unforgivable Sin")

Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherdThen He said to His disciples, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.” (Matthew 9:35-38) As Jesus is traveling throughout the region, multitudes of people started following Him for various reasons. (see THE GOSPEL: Jesus Teaches in Parables! Why?)

He was moved with compassion for them, because eventhough He is the Son of God, He was in the flesh, and who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. (Philippians 2:6-8) Therefore, since the harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few, Jesus is going to put the disciples to work; and He has a work for all of us to do, because we can have all the faith in the world, but ...also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. (James 2:17)
